Darkwater

Darkwater was released in 2021 as part of Lamin Fofana's ongoing exploration of Blackness, migration, and the movement of people across the Atlantic. The album serves as an immersive sonic essay, drawing heavily from the writings of W.E.B. Du Bois—specifically his 1920 work Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil. Fofana uses the record to bridge historical academic text with contemporary electronic textures, creating a soundscape that feels both archival and urgent.

The production process prioritizes atmospheric tension and rhythmic complexity, characteristic of Fofana's signature approach to electronic music. Released on his own label, Black Studies, the album was crafted to function as a medium for intellectual inquiry rather than traditional dance floor utility. Upon its release, the project received significant critical acclaim for its ability to distill complex sociopolitical histories into visceral, abstract audio, further cementing Fofana’s reputation as a thoughtful conceptualist in modern sound design.
