Where it came from
Released by the French label Erato in 1964, Divertissement Royal Au Chateau De Marly serves as a thematic exploration of the musical life surrounding the Sun King, Louis XIV. The recording captures the opulent, courtly atmosphere of the Château de Marly, which served as a private retreat for the monarch away from the rigid formalities of Versailles. By compiling works from eminent Baroque composers such as André Campra, Jean-Joseph Mouret, and François Couperin, the album aims to reconstruct the soundscape of seventeenth-century royal entertainment through historically informed performance practices of the mid-twentieth century.
The production features a distinguished ensemble including violinist Huguette Fernandez, flautist Maxence Larrieu, and harpsichordist Laurence Boulay, all of whom were instrumental in the mid-century revival of French Baroque music. The album reflects the scholarly yet accessible approach championed by Erato during this era, focusing on the interplay between instrumental suites and vocal divertissements. It was received as a significant contribution to the early music movement in France, valued for its commitment to period-appropriate aesthetics and the careful curation of works that defined the French courtly style.
