Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the Romanian state label Electrecord during the late 1960s or early 1970s, this recording represents a scholarly effort to archive and perform historical Romanian vocal music. The project was spearheaded by Marin Constantin, the visionary founder and conductor of the Corul Madrigal, an ensemble renowned for its technical precision and dedication to reviving Renaissance and pre-Renaissance polyphony. The record was part of a larger, ambitious series designed to document the development of musical culture across the historical provinces of Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania.

The album serves as a bridge between historical musicology and contemporary performance practice. Marin Constantin worked closely with researchers to select manuscripts from the 14th to 16th centuries, aiming to strip away later stylistic accretions to reveal the austere beauty of early Romanian vocal compositions. By presenting these pieces with the stark, disciplined vocal clarity characteristic of the Madrigal Choir, the release was received as a landmark achievement in Romanian ethnomusicology, cementing the choir’s reputation as the primary cultural institution for the preservation of the nation's early choral heritage.
