Where it came from
Released in 1978 on the Copacabana label, Dobrados is a significant collaborative effort between the renowned conductor and composer Rogério Duprat and Régis Duprat. Rogério, often celebrated as the 'Fifth Beatle' of the Tropicalia movement for his avant-garde arrangements on seminal albums by artists like Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil, brought a sophisticated structural sensibility to this project. The record focuses on the traditional Brazilian musical form of the dobrado, a genre deeply rooted in the heritage of military and brass bands, reimagining these marches with the refined, symphonic precision that defined the Duprat brothers' artistic output during this era.
The album stands as a testament to the versatility of the Duprat lineage, bridging the gap between popular Brazilian music and formal, orchestrated compositions. By revisiting the historical sounds of the dobrado, the brothers sought to preserve a vital aspect of Brazilian musical identity while applying contemporary production techniques. The work was met with critical interest for its high-fidelity approach to folk-adjacent brass instrumentation, serving as a late-career highlight for Rogério Duprat and an important archival contribution to the Copacabana catalog.
