Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the state-owned Romanian label Electrecord in the 1970s, this recording is part of a foundational series documenting the evolution of Romanian vocal music. The project was conceived as a comprehensive scholarly and artistic undertaking to preserve historical liturgical and secular compositions from the 14th to the 16th centuries across the historical regions of Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania.

The album features the Corul Madrigal, a world-renowned chamber choir founded and directed by the visionary conductor Marin Constantin. Constantin was celebrated for his meticulous research into early music and his ability to reinvigorate Byzantine and Renaissance choral textures for contemporary audiences. His approach aimed to bridge the gap between historical musicology and the expressive capabilities of a professional vocal ensemble, earning the series significant critical acclaim for its technical precision and cultural importance in Eastern European music history.
