Where it came from
Released in 1990 on the Smekkleysa label, Gling-Gló marks a distinctive departure from the alternative rock sounds Björk Guðmundsdóttir was known for at the time with The Sugarcubes. The album consists primarily of jazz standards sung in Icelandic, alongside a handful of original compositions. It was recorded in Reykjavik with the Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar, capturing a spontaneous, live-in-studio atmosphere that highlighted Björk’s versatility as a vocalist before her move into international solo electronic pop.
The album's minimalist aesthetic reflects the playful yet sophisticated nature of the recordings. The cover art features a striking, clean portrait that distinguishes it from the more abstract or aggressive visuals common in the post-punk scene of the era. Critically, the record was well-received in Iceland for its charm and technical proficiency, and it has since gained a cult following globally as an essential, early-career milestone that showcased the artist's deep appreciation for classic jazz arrangements.
