Provenance

Where it came from

This 1976 compilation from Polydor, catalog number 2392 843, serves as a celebration of traditional Gujarati folk music, specifically curated for the festivities of Navratri. During this period in the mid-1970s, record labels like Polydor played an essential role in preserving and distributing regional dance music to a growing urban audience, packaging communal garba and ras performances into accessible LP formats for household consumption.

The album features a notable assembly of vocalists including Suman Kalyanpur, Purushottam Upadhyay, and Minoo Purshottam, who were prominent figures in Indian light music and playback singing at the time. The production was intended to capture the vibrant, rhythmic spirit of Garba Ras Utsav, prioritizing high-energy arrangements suitable for community dancing. While these records were functional pieces of cultural media rather than high-concept art, they are remembered for their role in standardizing the musical repertoire heard at Navratri celebrations across Gujarat and the diaspora.
