Where it came from
Released in 1976 on the BASF label, this recording of Gregorian chants features the Choralschola der Capella Antiqua München. The ensemble was founded by Konrad Ruhland, a musicologist dedicated to the historically informed performance of medieval and Renaissance music. At a time when interest in early music was beginning to flourish among niche audiences, this record served as a scholarly yet accessible entry point into the monophonic, liturgical vocal tradition of the Catholic Church.
The album was produced during a period when BASF sought to expand its classical music catalog beyond its industrial roots. The design aesthetic is characteristic of 1970s European classical pressings, favoring minimalist typography and reverent, understated cover art that emphasizes the spiritual nature of the chants. Critically, the performance was praised for its technical precision and the ensemble's commitment to authentic vocal ornamentation, cementing their reputation as leading interpreters of the pre-polyphonic repertoire.
