Where it came from
The Gregorianische Gesänge anthology was recorded by the Choralschola der Capella Antiqua München under the direction of Konrad Ruhland, a prominent musicologist and champion of historically informed performance. Released by MPS Records, a label renowned for its high-fidelity jazz and classical recordings, this collection aimed to bring the austere, meditative quality of medieval monophony to a wider modern audience during the mid-20th century.
The recording reflects the mid-century revival of interest in liturgical chant, emphasizing clarity of phrasing and the distinct acoustic environment of monastic singing. By adhering to the rhythmic and stylistic rigor established by researchers of the era, the Capella Antiqua München successfully positioned these chants as both a scholarly project and an accessible listening experience, earning respect for their technical precision and atmospheric purity.
