Where it came from
Released in 1974 by the German jazz and classical label MPS Records, this anthology captures the Choralschola der Capella Antiqua München performing traditional liturgical melodies. The recording reflects the choir's dedication to historical authenticity, an approach championed by their conductor, Konrad Ruhland, who sought to strip away romanticized layers of interpretation in favor of the rhythmic nuances found in early medieval manuscripts.
The album serves as a definitive document of the Munich-based ensemble's rigorous research into the interpretation of neumes and modal patterns. During the 1970s, MPS Records was primarily known for its high-fidelity jazz recordings, and the release of this Gregorian collection showcased the label's commitment to sonic clarity and precision in its classical catalog, ultimately earning critical praise for both its technical production and its scholarly adherence to early music scholarship.
