Where it came from
Released by the Swiss label Ex Libris in the 1970s, this recording captures the liturgical tradition of the Einsiedeln Abbey, a significant Benedictine monastery in Switzerland. The album was produced to preserve the authentic sound of the Gregorian chant as practiced by the monks, serving as both a religious artifact and a scholarly document of medieval musical tradition within the context of the Roman Catholic Church.
The recording features the Choralschola of Kloster Einsiedeln under the direction of Pater Roman Bannwart, a respected musicologist and monk who dedicated much of his life to the restoration of chant notation. The performance emphasizes the meditative, monophonic quality of the genre, adhering to the Solesmes style which seeks to prioritize the natural flow of the Latin text over strict rhythmic regularity.
