Gregorianischer Choral = Gregorian Chant = Chant Grégorien (Benediktiner-Kloster = Benedictine Monastery = Monastère Des Bénédictins Montserrat)

Released in 1973 by the Deutsche Grammophon sub-label Archiv Produktion, this recording features the Escolania de Montserrat under the direction of Gregori Estrada. The record was produced as part of the label's commitment to the historically informed performance of early music, specifically focusing on the authentic liturgical traditions of the Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat in Catalonia. By documenting these ancient monophonic chants, the project sought to preserve the sonic heritage of a site that has served as a center for religious music for centuries.

The album reflects the aesthetic standards of Archiv Produktion, which prioritized acoustic clarity and scholarly rigor in its documentation of Western sacred music. Gregori Estrada, a significant figure in Catalan musicology and a monk at the monastery, worked to ensure the performances adhered to established chant traditions while benefiting from the high-fidelity recording techniques of the era. Upon its release, the recording was well-regarded for its atmospheric depth and the resonant acoustics of the abbey, finding a place in many classical libraries as a definitive example of Benedictine liturgical practice.
