Gregorianischer Choral = Gregorian Chant = Chant Grégorien

Produced by Archiv Produktion, a label established by Deutsche Grammophon to document the history of Western classical music with scholarly rigor, this recording captures the liturgical tradition of the Benedictine abbey of Einsiedeln in Switzerland. Released in the early 1970s, it reflects the label's commitment to historically informed performance practice, aiming to present Gregorian chant not merely as a museum piece, but as a living component of the monastic tradition under the direction of Pater Roman Bannwart.

The recording is celebrated for its authenticity and the acoustic clarity provided by the abbey's architecture, which serves as a natural extension of the music's spiritual character. Pater Roman Bannwart, a respected musicologist, led the Choralschola with an emphasis on the rhythmic fluidity and melodic nuance that define the St. Gall school of chant. Upon its release, it was received as a definitive reference for those seeking to understand the aesthetic and meditative depth of the medieval liturgical repertoire.
