I Am A Wallet

Released in 1988 on the Lamia label, I Am A Wallet represents a distinct moment in the late 1980s underground music scene. The project, led by the artist McCarthy, reflects the group’s commitment to combining indie-pop melodies with overtly political, often Marxist, lyrical themes. This particular record serves as a bridge in their discography, capturing the tension between their tuneful, jangly guitar sound and the didactic, challenging nature of their messages.

The album's design and sound were largely influenced by the band’s desire to operate outside the mainstream industry while effectively communicating their ideological goals. Critics at the time noted the juxtaposition of its accessible, bright production against the dense, polemical content. While it did not achieve significant commercial success upon its release, the record has since been regarded by enthusiasts of the UK indie scene as a representative artifact of the politicized jangle-pop movement.
