Where it came from
Released in 1975 by Archiv Produktion, this recording of Alessandro Scarlatti’s madrigals features the Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg under the direction of Jürgen Jürgens. The album was produced as part of the label's commitment to historically informed performance, capturing the complex, transitional vocal style of the late Italian Baroque. The release was a deliberate effort to bring Scarlatti's lesser-known secular vocal works to a wider audience, moving beyond his more frequently performed operas and keyboard sonatas.
The album is noted for its clean, precise production, reflecting the high standards of the Deutsche Grammophon Archiv series, which prioritized musicological accuracy and acoustic fidelity. Jürgen Jürgens, a significant figure in German choral conducting, sought to highlight the intricate polyphonic interplay and emotional depth inherent in Scarlatti's madrigal compositions. Upon its release, it was well-received by critics for its balanced ensemble work and serves as a refined example of 1970s period-performance aesthetic.
