Where it came from
Released in 1984 to mark the quarter-century milestone of the Experimental Music Studios at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, this compilation serves as an archival document of the pioneering work conducted at one of the oldest academic electronic music facilities in the United States. Established in 1958, the studio became a primary hub for computer music research and synthesis, fostering a unique intersection between technical engineering and avant-garde composition.
The record compiles works from composers and researchers associated with the institution during its formative decades, reflecting the evolving methodologies of early computer-generated sound. By presenting these pieces together, the collection captures the experimental ethos of the era, where artists navigated the limitations of early hardware to explore new textures and algorithmic structures. The release acts as both an educational artifact and a historical bridge, documenting the academic rigor that helped define the early development of electronic music as a distinct discipline.
