Provenance

Where it came from

Released by Deutsche Grammophon's specialized Literatur label in 1980, this recording captures the acerbic and sophisticated wit of Austrian writer and satirist Friedrich Torberg. The project was designed as a curated anthology, bringing together a collection of poems, prose excerpts, and reflections titled 'In Seligkeit Und Sünden' that highlighted the intellectual climate of early twentieth-century Vienna.

The production relies on the dramatic delivery of various performers who interpret Torberg's rhythmic and often biting observations on life and human folly. As a release from Deutsche Grammophon, it was intended for the connoisseur of German-language literature, emphasizing the auditory quality of the spoken word over the label's more traditional musical offerings.
