"Kaffee-Kantate" (Schweigt Stille, Plaudert Nicht) / "Bauern-Kantate" (Mer Hahn En Neue Oberkeet)

This recording of Johann Sebastian Bach’s secular cantatas, BWV 211 and BWV 212, was released on the Odeon label as part of its classical repertoire during the mid-20th century. These works, often referred to as the Coffee Cantata and the Peasant Cantata, represent a lighter, more satirical side of Bach's output, commissioned to provide entertainment in the social atmosphere of 18th-century Leipzig coffee houses and rural celebrations.

The production features the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of Karl Forster, with prominent soloists including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Forster, known for his work with the St. Hedwig’s Cathedral Choir, sought to bring a balance of period-appropriate precision and operatic warmth to these recordings. The release was well-regarded by critics of the era for its technical fidelity and the nuanced performance of the soloists, particularly in capturing the whimsical, character-driven nature of Bach’s secular storytelling.
