Klaviersonaten - Sonates Pour Piano Es-Dur Hob.XVI/38 G-Dur Hob.XVI/39 e-Moll Hob.XVI/34

This recording was released on the Swiss label Ex Libris, a company historically significant for its role in distributing classical music to subscribers and the broader public in German-speaking regions during the mid-20th century. These performances feature the Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, a musician widely celebrated for his meticulous approach to the Viennese classical canon. By selecting these three specific piano sonatas by Joseph Haydn, Buchbinder highlights the composer's structural innovation and the transition toward the mature classical style.

The recording serves as an early document of Buchbinder’s long-standing dedication to Haydn, a composer whose work he has revisited extensively throughout his career. Eschewing the romanticized interpretations common in earlier decades, Buchbinder’s approach during this period is characterized by clarity, technical precision, and an emphasis on the interplay between Haydn’s wit and rigorous formal development. This release is representative of the high-fidelity classical output of the era, produced for an audience that valued standard repertoire performed with scholarly intent.
