Where it came from
Released in 1978 by the German label Maritim, this record belongs to a popular series of children's audio dramas adapted from Otfried Preußler's classic 1957 children’s book, Die kleine Hexe. The production was part of a larger trend in 1970s West Germany where radio plays and audio recordings became a staple for youth entertainment, allowing children to experience literary narratives through voice acting and sound design.
The audio drama features the work of Joachim von Ulmann, who was a recurring voice talent and creative contributor for Maritim’s children’s catalog. The design of these records typically favored colorful, story-centric cover art intended to catch the eye of young listeners in retail bins. The series was well-received as an accessible entry point to German children's literature, remaining a nostalgic touchstone for those who grew up listening to these dramatizations.
