Where it came from
Released in 1978 under the Maritim label, this record serves as an entry in the German-language children's audio drama tradition that flourished in the late twentieth century. It adapts the narratives of Otfried Preußler's beloved character, the Little Witch, specifically focusing on the whimsical adventures featuring the characters Karin and Fredi. The production was part of a broader trend of mid-century German audio storytelling designed to provide educational and imaginative entertainment for young listeners via the accessible format of vinyl.
The production features the creative direction of Joachim von Ulmann, whose work often characterized the distinctive, slightly minimalist aesthetic common to Maritim’s catalog during this period. The design and narrative delivery were intended to mirror the cozy, domestic atmosphere of German children's literature, prioritizing gentle vocal performances and accessible soundscapes. Upon its release, it was received as a standard piece of family media, securing a place in the homes of many German-speaking children as a staple of their listening libraries.
