Where it came from
Released in the early 1970s on the French label Arion, La Kora du Sénégal features the virtuosic kora playing of Lamine Konté. This recording was part of Arion's mission to document traditional world music, capturing the delicate, harp-like intricacies of the West African kora for a global audience. Konté, a respected master of the instrument, provided an intimate performance that served as a significant bridge for Western listeners to appreciate the complex musical heritage of the Mandinka people.
The album's design reflects the aesthetic typical of Arion’s ethnographic series, favoring minimalist presentation that centers on the cultural authenticity of the musician. It was received as an essential archival document of Senegalese musical tradition, praised for its clarity and the raw, unadorned capture of Konté’s improvisational style. Over the decades, the record has retained its status among ethnomusicologists and collectors of African folk music as a quintessential representation of kora artistry.
