La Musique De Chambre

Released in 1972 on the French label Valois, this collection represents the esteemed efforts of a group of renowned early music specialists to capture the intimacy of Baroque chamber works. The recording features an ensemble comprising flutist Michel Debost, oboist Claude Maisonneuve, harpsichordist Huguette Dreyfus, cellist Jean Lamy, and flutist Christian Lardé, performing compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel. The album was produced during a period of high interest in historically informed performance practices in France, where Valois was instrumental in documenting the nuanced, scholarly interpretations of the era's leading instrumentalists.

The design of the Valois catalog, including CMB 5, typically favored minimalist, academic aesthetics that prioritized the clarity of the musical program over flamboyant cover art. By emphasizing the specific instrumentation and the collaborative nature of the performance, the production aimed to appeal to listeners seeking authentic soundscapes. Received as a reliable and technically proficient documentation of the period, these recordings helped solidify the reputations of musicians like Huguette Dreyfus, whose influence on the revival of the harpsichord in 20th-century France remains highly regarded by collectors and musicologists alike.
