Where it came from
Laminated Denim was released in October 2022 as the twenty-second studio album by the Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. The album serves as a companion piece to their simultaneous release, Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava, and is constructed from two extended improvisational tracks, The Land Before Timeland and Hypertension. The record represents the band's ongoing exploration of krautrock-inspired rhythmic structures and repetitive, driving musical motifs.
The album's title is an anagram of 'Made in Timeland', reflecting the band's playful approach to its creative origins, as the tracks grew out of a project originally commissioned as incidental music for a festival that was ultimately cancelled. Released independently through their own KGLW label, the album was designed as a vinyl-only conceptual experiment, prioritizing long-form instrumental flow over traditional song structures. It was received by fans and critics as a notable showcase of the band's technical improvisational synergy and their commitment to self-managed distribution.
