Lamizana / Kaïra

Released in the early 1970s on the Volta Discobel label, this recording captures the vibrant pulse of post-independence Burkina Faso, then known as Upper Volta. Amadou Balaké, a central figure in West African music, recorded these tracks alongside Les 5 Consuls during a period when the nation was fostering a unique fusion of traditional rhythms, Congolese rumba, and Afro-Cuban influences. The record reflects the cosmopolitan spirit of Ouagadougou’s nightlife, where musicians synthesized continental styles into a distinctively Burkinabe sound.

The design and production of VDB 001 represent the foundational era of the Burkinabe recording industry, characterized by independent labels seeking to document local talent. While specific design credits for the sleeve art are often obscured by the passage of time and the informal nature of regional pressing plants of that era, the music itself remains a highly regarded artifact of highlife and Afro-pop. Its contemporary reception among global collectors and musicologists is one of reverence, as it serves as a critical entry point into Balaké’s evolution toward becoming one of the most celebrated vocalists in the Sahel.
