Lamin Fofana And The Doudou Ndiaye Rose Family

Released in 2023 by Honest Jon's Records, this project represents a significant cross-generational dialogue between Sierra Leonean-born electronic musician Lamin Fofana and the legendary Doudou Ndiaye Rose Family, a Senegalese percussion ensemble. The collaboration emerged from Fofana’s ongoing exploration of black music and global interconnectedness, bridging his signature atmospheric, abstract electronic textures with the polyrhythmic, propulsive traditions of the Sabar drum ensemble led by the descendants of the late master drummer Doudou Ndiaye Rose.

The production process sought to integrate the distinct sonic weight of the ensemble’s acoustic percussion with the digital minimalism often found in Fofana’s compositions. Honest Jon's, a label known for its curation of global music and experimental works, facilitated this meeting to highlight the evolution of West African rhythmic heritage in a contemporary digital context. Critics have noted the release for its meditative yet kinetic approach, framing it as a thoughtful study in how ancestral rhythmic patterns interact with modern electronic synthesis.
