Le Quatuor De Jazz Libre Du Quebec

Le Quatuor De Jazz Libre Du Québec released this self-titled album in 1972 through Radio Canada International’s transcript series, catalog number 271. The group was a central force in the Canadian avant-garde scene during the early 1970s, emerging from a period of intense artistic experimentation in Montreal. Their work reflected the era's fusion of free jazz principles with a distinctively Quebecois nationalist and sociopolitical consciousness, pushing boundaries beyond traditional bebop or swing structures.

The ensemble, featuring members like Maurice Richard and Yves Charbonneau, sought to dismantle conventional jazz hierarchies through collective improvisation and unconventional instrumentation. The album serves as a document of their raw, uncompromising aesthetic, characterized by discordant brass, persistent rhythmic shifts, and a departure from standard melodic patterns. Upon its release, the recording was primarily intended for international broadcast distribution, which contributed to its status as a rare and highly sought-after artifact by collectors interested in the evolution of radical Canadian music.
