Chant Grégorien: Messe de Saint Martin

Released in 1973 under the Radio Canada International label, this recording captures the liturgical tradition of the Benedictine monks at the Abbaye Saint-Benoît-du-Lac in Quebec. The abbey, established in 1912 on the shores of Lake Memphremagog, became a significant center for the preservation and study of Gregorian chant in North America. This particular recording was produced as part of an effort by the national broadcaster to archive and share the musical heritage of religious institutions across the country during a period of cultural introspection in Quebec.

The production sought to capture the acoustic atmosphere of the monastery’s limestone chapel, favoring a minimalist recording approach that emphasized the monophonic purity of the plainsong. The design reflects the austere aesthetic of the era’s archival releases, utilizing simple, respectful typography and iconography associated with the Benedictine order. While these recordings were not intended for mass-market commercial success, they were well-received by liturgical scholars and enthusiasts of choral music for their fidelity to the traditional interpretation of the Roman Gradual.
