L'homme Du Zekete-zekete

L'homme Du Zekete-zekete stands as a rare artifact of the vibrant Zairean soukous scene of the mid-1980s. Released independently by Beniko Zangilu in 1985, the recording captures a transitional period in African popular music where intricate guitar-driven melodies were being blended with emerging electronic production techniques. The work reflects the high-energy, dance-oriented aesthetic that defined Kinshasa’s nightlife during that decade, serving as a testament to the prolific and often DIY nature of the regional independent music industry.

As a private press release, catalogued as MPL 003, the record was produced outside the major label systems that typically distributed African music to international markets. This scarcity has made it a prized acquisition for ethnomusicologists and collectors of Congolese rumba. The design and sound profiles of such independent releases from the era often prioritized authenticity and local appeal over polished studio aesthetics, reflecting the raw, rhythmic intensity that Zangilu sought to showcase to his domestic audience.
