Provenance

Where it came from

This 1985 recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Saint Matthew Passion, released on the Erato label, represents a significant entry in the discography of Swiss conductor Michel Corboz. Produced during his long-standing tenure with the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the release reflects the conductor's commitment to balancing historical sensitivity with a lush, romanticized approach to Baroque repertoire that defined much of the Erato catalog during the 1980s.

The recording features an international cast of vocalists, including British tenors Anthony Rolfe Johnson and Kurt Equiluz, who was renowned for his expertise in the Evangelist role. The production was intended to offer a polished, resonant interpretation of Bach's monumental work, moving away from the starker period-instrument aesthetics that were gaining traction at the time. It received moderate critical attention as a reliable, mainstream performance that highlighted Corboz's ability to maintain clear textures within a larger orchestral framework.
