Where it came from
Released in 1978 on the Copacabana label, Maxixes serves as a focused exploration of the maxixe, a Brazilian dance style that gained international prominence in the early 20th century. Orchestrated by Rogério Duprat, a central figure in the Tropicália movement known for his sophisticated avant-garde arrangements, the album reflects an effort to preserve and revitalize the rhythmic elegance of this traditional genre through the lens of late-seventies production.
Régis Duprat collaborated on this project, bringing an analytical and technical approach to the record's composition. The work is regarded as a respectful nod to the roots of Brazilian popular music, prioritizing the intricate interplay of instrumentation over the experimental rock sensibilities for which the Duprat name is more famously known. It stands as a curated testament to the enduring influence of the maxixe within the broader tapestry of Brazilian instrumental history.
