Where it came from
Released in 1978 on the Copacabana label, Valsas & Polcas captures the collaborative spirit of musicologist and composer Régis Duprat and his brother, the renowned conductor and arranger Rogério Duprat. This recording belongs to a broader effort by the Duprat family to preserve and reinterpret Brazilian instrumental music from the 19th and early 20th centuries, bridging the gap between classical scholarly research and popular accessibility.
The album reflects Rogério Duprat’s distinctive approach to orchestration, which often balanced structural fidelity to original scores with the vibrant, lush textures characteristic of the Brazilian studio scene in the late 1970s. While Régis Duprat provided the academic rigor and historical context through his research into period compositions, Rogério’s arrangement style ensured the project resonated with contemporary listeners, cementing its place as a thoughtful contribution to the preservation of traditional dance forms like the waltz and polka within a modern recording context.
