Movie!

Originally released in 1979, Movie! represents a pivotal moment in the solo career of Holger Czukay, a founding member of the influential krautrock band Can. During this era, Czukay was deeply involved in experimental tape-looping techniques, using early digital sampling methods to create soundscapes that blurred the lines between ambient composition, rhythmic collage, and avant-garde field recordings. The work reflects his transition from conventional studio instrumentation to a more fractured, cinematic approach to sound design, heavily influenced by his work as a film composer.

This 2016 reissue, released by Grönland Records, was produced to preserve the legacy of Czukay’s idiosyncratic catalog. The label’s remastering process aimed to clarify the dense, layered textures of the original recordings, which were constructed through a painstaking process of splicing and re-layering magnetic tape. While the album was originally an underground endeavor that challenged listeners accustomed to traditional song structures, it has since been recognized by critics as a foundational document in the development of modern sampling and experimental electronic music.
