Where it came from
Originally released in 1979, Movies is the second solo studio album by Holger Czukay, a founding member of the influential krautrock ensemble Can. The album emerged during a period of intense experimentation for Czukay, who utilized his signature tape-editing techniques to construct surreal, rhythmic soundscapes. By sampling shortwave radio broadcasts alongside his own instrumental contributions, he created a fractured yet melodic mosaic that bridged the gap between avant-garde electronic music and pop sensibilities.
The 2018 reissue by Grönland Records served to restore this cult classic to vinyl, preserving the complex sonic layering that defines Czukay's work. The design ethos behind the original release reflected his interest in global perspectives and technological collage, often incorporating cryptic, enigmatic imagery to mirror the album’s atmospheric content. Upon its initial release, the album was celebrated by critics and fellow musicians for its pioneering approach to sampling, and it remains a foundational text in the history of experimental electronic music.
