Originally released in 1979, Movies serves as a landmark solo achievement for Holger Czukay following his departure from the influential krautrock band Can. The album is a pioneering work of early sampling technology, as Czukay meticulously edited shortwave radio recordings, snippets of world music, and studio improvisations using a basic tape recorder. By layering these disjointed audio fragments over rhythmic foundations, he effectively invented a new technique of sonic collage that bridged the gap between experimental sound art and pop structure.

This 2018 reissue by Grönland Records was produced to preserve the legacy of Czukay's experimental production methods. The design aesthetic remains faithful to the minimalist, somewhat cryptic spirit of the original release, reflecting the artist’s own idiosyncratic philosophy. Upon its initial release, the album was viewed as a radical departure from conventional rock, though it has since been widely recognized by music historians as a foundational text for the development of ambient and electronic sampling.
