Mühür Gözlüm / Yüz Yıl Yerde Yatsam

Released by Pathé in the mid-20th century, this 45-rpm record features the work of Âşık Ali İzzet, a prominent figure in the tradition of Turkish folk minstrelsy. The recordings capture the essence of the ozan (bard) tradition, emphasizing poetic lyricism and the melancholic, emotive vocal style central to Central Anatolian folk music. During this era, Pathé played a significant role in documenting and disseminating the works of regional masters, bridging the gap between traditional oral performance and the burgeoning commercial recording industry.

The A-side, Mühür Gözlüm, remains one of the most recognizable folk compositions in Turkish musical heritage. While Ali İzzet’s interpretation is foundational, the song itself is deeply embedded in the cultural landscape, often celebrated for its evocative imagery and poetic depth. The design of the sleeve and label reflects the utilitarian, functional aesthetic typical of international labels distributing regional folk music in the post-war period, prioritizing archival clarity over elaborate art direction.
