Where it came from
This 78-rpm record, released under the Columbia label, features the iconic Ghazal singer Farida Khanum. These recordings emerge from the mid-20th-century golden age of the Pakistani music industry, a period when the classical traditions of the subcontinent were increasingly captured on shellac to reach a broader, burgeoning audience of radio and phonograph listeners.
The tracks demonstrate the nuanced vocal delivery that established Khanum as the 'Malika-e-Ghazal.' The recordings reflect the era's commitment to preserving the poetic integrity of Urdu ghazals, focusing on the emotive tension between melody and lyrics. The production highlights the characteristic minimalist instrumentation of the time, centered on the harmonium and tabla, which allowed Khanum's distinctive, authoritative phrasing to define the emotional landscape of the performance.
