Where it came from
Released in 1973 on the Nyang Omaki Crocodile label, this 7-inch single captures a pivotal moment in the evolution of Kenyan Benga music. Produced during a period of significant cultural output in East Africa, the track features the Dudi Jazz Band, an ensemble emblematic of the regional shift toward electric instrumentation and hybrid rhythmic structures that defined the Nairobi music scene in the early 1970s.
The composition draws upon traditional Luo musical heritage, blending intricate, interlocking guitar lines with syncopated percussion to create the signature sound that would later gain international recognition. Like many independent East African pressings of the era, the record reflects a grassroots approach to production and distribution, serving as a vital documentation of local artistic expression before the consolidation of larger media conglomerates.
