Provenance

Where it came from

Johann Sebastian Bach composed The Musical Offering between 1747 and 1748, following a visit to the court of Frederick the Great. The work is a collection of keyboard canons, fugues, and a trio sonata based on a complex musical theme provided to Bach by the King himself, designed as a demonstration of the composer's mastery of counterpoint and intellectual rigor in music composition.

The Electrecord release ST-ECE 01647, issued in 1980, represents the Romanian state label's contribution to the broader international cataloging of Bach's late-career masterpiece. As a product of the Eastern Bloc's state-run recording initiatives, this edition focused on high-fidelity accessibility for listeners within the region, reflecting the era's emphasis on preserving canonical Western classical works through local orchestral and chamber music performances.
