Organ Works = Oeuvres Pour Orgue = Orgelwerke

Released in 1983 on the Argo label, this recording features Peter Hurford performing the organ works of Johann Pachelbel on the Beckerath organ of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge. This collaboration emerged during a period when the Argo label was highly regarded for its commitment to high-fidelity recordings of classical organ repertoire, pairing Hurford’s technical precision with the specific tonal characteristics of historically informed or modern tracker-action instruments.

The design of this release reflects the minimalist and clean aesthetic associated with Argo's classical catalog in the early 1980s. Peter Hurford was a noted authority on the performance of Baroque organ music, and his approach here aimed to strip away the heavy, romanticized performance styles common in earlier decades, favoring a transparent, rhythmic clarity that highlights the structural ingenuity of Pachelbel’s compositions. The recording was generally received as a definitive reference for listeners seeking an accurate, academic, yet expressive interpretation of these works.
