Where it came from
Released under the Alpha label as part of their dedicated effort to preserve the chamber music of Wallonia, this recording highlights works by Guillaume Lekeu, Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, and André-Modeste Gretry. The collection serves as an exploration of the region's musical heritage, contrasting the distinct harmonic language of late 19th-century composer Lekeu with the lighter, baroque and classical sensibilities of his predecessors, Loeillet and Gretry.
The production sought to bring critical attention to Lekeu's unfinished output, specifically his 'Quatuor Inachevé,' a haunting piece reflective of the composer's tragic and premature end at the age of 24. Alpha's curation of these sessions aimed for a transparent, authentic sound profile that emphasizes the interplay between the four instruments, prioritizing the structural integrity of the scores over modern interpretive flourishes.
