Quatuor Avec Piano Op. 30

The Piano Quartet in A Major, Op. 30, was composed by Ernest Chausson between 1897 and 1898. As a student of Massenet and a disciple of César Franck, Chausson sought to balance the structural rigor of the German tradition with the nuanced, cyclical emotional depth characteristic of the French Impressionist movement. This work remains one of his most significant contributions to chamber music, celebrated for its expansive, moody intensity and the intricate interplay between the piano and the string trio.

This 1984 recording, released under the Harmonia Mundi France label, features an ensemble of distinguished French musicians: pianist Jean-Claude Pennetier, violinist Régis Pasquier, violist Bruno Pasquier, and cellist Roland Pidoux. Their performance was widely praised for its technical precision and profound understanding of the late Romantic French idiom. Harmonia Mundi, known for its high-fidelity production values and dedication to the chamber repertoire, captured the quartet's subtle tonal shifts with a clarity that helped secure the recording's status as a reference performance for this specific composition.
