Quintet In C Major - Quintet In C-Dur - Quintette En Ut

Released in 1974 on the CBS label, this recording features the Juilliard String Quartet joined by cellist Bernard Greenhouse for Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major, D. 956. Composed in 1828 just months before Schubert’s death, the piece is widely regarded as one of the most profound achievements in the chamber music repertoire, known for its expansive structure and emotional depth. By the time this recording was produced, the Juilliard String Quartet had established itself as one of the preeminent chamber ensembles in the world, renowned for their precise technique and commitment to modern interpretation.

This specific performance captures a hallmark of the Juilliard ensemble's mid-1970s period, where they often sought to balance technical rigor with a nuanced approach to the Romantic canon. The collaboration with Bernard Greenhouse, a founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio, added a layer of soloistic authority to the quintet's cello section. Upon its release, the recording was positioned within the CBS Masterworks series, aimed at audiophiles and classical music enthusiasts who appreciated the quartet's analytical approach to Schubert's complex, symphonic-scale writing.
