Quintet In C Major, Op. 163, Quartettsatz In C Minor, Op. Posth.

The 1975 Ace of Diamonds release, catalog number SDD 441, features the Weller-Quartett performing Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major and the Quartettsatz in C Minor. The Ace of Diamonds label functioned as a budget-conscious reissue imprint for Decca, designed to make high-quality recordings from the label’s catalog accessible to a broader audience during the mid-1970s. By this period, Schubert’s late chamber works were firmly established in the canon as pinnacle achievements of the Romantic era, prized for their profound emotional depth and complex harmonic structure.

The Weller-Quartett, led by Austrian violinist Walter Weller, was highly regarded for their idiomatic approach to the Viennese classical tradition. Their collaboration with cellist Richard Harand for the Quintet was particularly noted for its technical precision and textural clarity. Critics of the era frequently praised these reissues for preserving the sophisticated engineering standards of Decca’s original sessions while providing a refined interpretation that honored the lyrical, often melancholy nature of Schubert’s final compositions.
