Salzburg Serenades, Serenata Nocturna, K.239, Three Divertimenti, K.136, K.137, K.138

This recording, featuring Mozart's Serenata Nocturna and his three early Divertimenti for strings, was produced by Concert Hall Society, a label that gained significant traction in the mid-twentieth century for its subscription-based model. By bringing the works of the Boyd Neel Chamber Orchestra and the Hamburger Kammerorchester under the baton of Walter Goehr to home listeners, the label aimed to democratize access to high-quality classical repertoire during the post-war rise of the long-playing record.

The musical selections themselves date back to Mozart's time in Salzburg, reflecting the refined, light-hearted aesthetic of the divertimento and the serenade genres intended for social entertainment. The cover design and liner notes of these mid-century pressings often leaned into a clean, academic presentation typical of the era's classical music market, focusing on the historical gravity of the compositions while showcasing the technical proficiency of the conductors and their ensembles.
