Same Time

Released in 1974 on the Kaya-Lami label, Same Time is a significant artifact of the South African music scene during a period of intense cultural and political transition. The record features the collaboration between Willie Motlana and the Osborn Bros, capturing the distinctive fusion of soul and mbaqanga rhythms that characterized the label's output. The production reflects the era's lean, studio-focused approach, prioritizing the interplay between Motlana's vocal delivery and the backing instrumentation provided by the Osborn Bros.

The Kaya-Lami label, which served as a home for various artists navigating the restrictive climate of the 1970s, intended to bring contemporary rhythmic styles to a broader listening audience. While these recordings were often produced under significant resource constraints, they are now highly regarded by ethnomusicologists and collectors for their authenticity and the way they bridged urban soul with traditional South African musical textures. The record remains a valued example of independent production within the regional landscape of the time.
