Salute To ABBA / Hors D'oeuvre

Released in 1976 on the Lamington label, this single is a comedic artifact from the Australian television landscape of the 1970s. It features Garry McDonald in his persona as Norman Gunston, a bumbling, perpetually bandaged current affairs interviewer who became a pop culture phenomenon. The track was recorded at the height of ABBA's massive popularity in Australia, serving as a satirical commentary on the nation's obsession with the Swedish group.

The record was designed to mimic the novelty hits that often emerged from television sketches of the era. Musically, it juxtaposes Gunston's awkward, off-key vocal delivery with a pastiche of pop production styles. While it was intended as a parody, the release achieved genuine commercial success on the Australian charts, illustrating the unique cultural impact of the Norman Gunston character and the widespread, occasionally frenzied, reception of ABBA during their 1976 tour of the country.
