Sämtliche Werke Für Klavier Und Orchester = The Complete Works For Piano And Orchestra = L'Oeuvre Integrale Pour Piano Et Orchestre

Released in the early 1970s by Philips, this comprehensive box set captures the monumental collaboration between pianist Claudio Arrau, conductor Eliahu Inbal, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The project was conceived to document Arrau's definitive interpretative approach to Chopin's concertante repertoire, a body of work that remained central to his concert performances for decades. Philips sought to pair one of the most respected Romantic-era stylists with a high-fidelity recording environment that could accommodate the expansive, nuanced tone for which Arrau was famous.

The production design reflects the minimalist, authoritative aesthetic favored by the Philips label during this era, emphasizing the sobriety and intellectual weight of Arrau’s playing. Critics at the time praised the set for its gravity and the seamless interplay between the soloist and the London Philharmonic, noting that Arrau eschewed virtuosic flashiness in favor of a profound, structural clarity. The collection remains a standard reference for listeners exploring Chopin's evolution from the early concertos to the later, more technically demanding fantasies and variations.
