Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1970 by His Master’s Voice, this collection serves as a significant archival project dedicated to the musical interpretation of Swedish poet Erik Axel Karlfeldt’s verses. The recordings bring together the compositions of Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, a central figure in late Romantic Swedish music, with the vocal talents of esteemed performers including Erland Hagegård and Helge Brilioth. The project aimed to preserve the intersection of Swedish national romanticism and lyric poetry, capturing the folk-inspired melodies that defined Peterson-Berger's approach to setting Karlfeldt’s rhythmic, nature-focused texts to music.

The design of the collection reflects the period's focus on formal, scholarly presentation within the classical recording industry. By bundling these cycles—ranging from 'Vildmarks- och kärleksvisor' to 'Hösthorn'—the label sought to provide a comprehensive listening experience for enthusiasts of the Swedish art song tradition, known as 'romans.' The collection was received as a respectful, definitive contribution to the Swedish cultural canon, emphasizing the structural integrity and emotional depth of the original works through the refined, minimalist production aesthetics typical of His Master's Voice releases during that era.
