Sämtliche Streichquartette = Complete String Quartets = Intégrales Des Quatuors A Cordes

Released in 1983 by the German label Telefunken, this box set presents the complete string quartets of Johannes Brahms as performed by the Alban Berg Quartett. The recording project reflects a significant era in chamber music performance, during which the Vienna-based ensemble gained international renown for their technical precision and analytical approach to the Romantic repertoire. The release is a cornerstone of the Telefunken catalog, documenting a period when the ensemble was refining their signature sound, characterized by structural clarity and an intense, polished tonal palette that challenged more traditional, loosely interpretative styles of the mid-20th century.

The packaging and presentation of this 6.35447 DX pressing adhere to the rigorous aesthetic standards of West German classical production in the early 1980s. The Alban Berg Quartett, having formed at the Vienna Academy of Music, approached Brahms with a devotion to the composer's intricate contrapuntal architecture. Upon its release, the set was received as a definitive reference for modern listeners, praised by critics for its balance of Germanic academic rigor and the expressive warmth demanded by Brahms's late-period chamber works. It remains a hallmark of high-fidelity analog chamber music production from the final years of the vinyl era.
